Georgia AG Pressures SEC to Punish LSU Over NFL Player Plan

Arnel Tan·September 3, 2026·2 min read

Georgia’s attorney general has formally urged the Southeastern Conference to take its strongest available actions against LSU if the school allows former NFL players to suit up for its football team, according to multiple reports published Thursday.

NBC Sports, ESPN, CBS Sports, and The New York Times all covered the request, which was directed at SEC leadership. The attorney general’s office is pushing the conference to consider measures that could include heavy fines, suspension of head coach Lane Kiffin, or even expulsion of LSU from the league, per WAFB and CBS Sports.

The push stems from LSU’s reported interest in rostering players with professional experience. While no such move has been confirmed, the Georgia official is asking the SEC to be ready to respond decisively if it happens. The request reportedly calls on the conference to use “all measures available” to enforce its rules, as ESPN characterized the letter.

The situation is notable because it pits a state attorney general against a member institution over a roster question that has no clear precedent in college football. The SEC has not publicly commented on the matter, and it remains unclear whether LSU has any formal plan to add former pros.

What to watch next: whether the SEC issues a public response to the attorney general’s letter, and whether LSU clarifies its roster intentions before the season progresses.
